Microneedling has been around for a while and has always promised softer, smoother skin, and a minimised appearance of pores and scares. But is it worth the hype, and what actually is it? This week, we scoured the web to find your biggest queries on the procedure.
So without further ado, here are the answers to your most Googled questions on Microneedling...
1. WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING USED FOR?
Microneedling is a facial treatment which uses tiny needles to gently puncture the surface of your skin causing controlled microscopic injuries. The punctures encourage your body to boost it’s healing powers, increasing collagen and elastin production.
Our skin naturally makes less collagen as we age, so as the skin is forced to repair itself. It helps to achieve that super smooth, youthful glow that everyone wants.
2. IS MICRONEEDLING GOOD FOR YOUR SKIN?
If you want to live that blemish free life, microneedling can help. The treatment can improve scarring, fine lines or wrinkles, and help with loose skin. And that’s not all, if you’re after a more even skin tone, or to minimise the look of brown spots, it’s worth booking yourself in.
3. DOES MICRONEEDLING HELP WITH ACNE SCARS?
If you’ve ever suffered from acne, you’re not alone. According to recent research, more than 90% of the entire world population is affected by acne at some point in their life; the acne struggle is very real.
Microneedling is proven to reduce the appearance of acne scars and give you a smoother skin surface. Sounds too good to be true, right?
Here’s how it works: When the surface of your skin is damaged, it naturally undergoes a process known as fibrosis. This is where everything beneath the skin begins to stick back together and heal. Sometimes this ‘glue’ is so strong that it pulls the skin down creating a mark which then appears as a scar.
The microneedling treatment helps to break up the fibrosis, and release the pockets of the skin, allowing it to smoothen back out again.
4. HOW MUCH DOES MICRONEEDLING HURT?
You’ve probably heard it many times before, but pain is subjective. Everyone has a different pain tolerance, so it’s hard to answer the question: does microneedling hurt?
With that in mind, there are few things that will affect how much the treatment hurts; from whether you pop on some numbing cream before you begin, to the length and type of needles used for the procedure.
For very shallow treatments such as 0.5mm, numbing cream is not a necessity. There is very little pain at shallow depths. Other factors like how often you’ve had microneedling before also plays into it.
5. HOW OFTEN SHOULD MICRONEEDLING BE DONE?
For the best results, we recommend 6 treatments over the course of 6 months. After that, one every 6 months will do the trick.
The treatment itself takes between 60 and 90 minutes in our Aesthetic Lab, and it’s normal to experience some redness for a few hours once it’s done. You’ll then just follow your normal skin routine in between appointments and our tribe of experts will be with you every step of the way.
